Toufic Kachaamy: What If You Want More Than What the Cancer Screening Guidelines Offer?
Toufic Kachaamy, Chief of Medicine and Director of Gastroenterology at City of Hope, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What if you want more than what the cancer screening guidelines offer?
Most screening guidelines are reactive, they change slowly, after years of accumulating data. But in an age of rapid innovation, patients are often left wondering: What if I want to do more?
Maybe you have a strong family history… Maybe you’re concerned about a specific cancer… Maybe you just want the most proactive approach available.
The good news? There are options beyond the guidelines:
• Personalized risk stratification: understanding your inherited risks and current risk factors
• Advanced imaging and endoscopic screening: especially in high-risk groups
• Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) blood tests
• Personalized screening protocols developed by multidisciplinary teams
But these aren’t always easy to access or well publicized. That’s why it’s important to advocate for yourself and why we need to build systems that meet patients where they are.
Today, all top medical centers provide executive health screening. While the evidence for benefit for these programs is lacking, in this day of rapid innovations, we need a new way of obtaining evidence.
If you’re a clinician, a caregiver, or just someone trying to stay ahead of cancer: it’s time we talked more openly about these options.”
