Toufic Kachaamy: Raising Awareness at the Colon Cancer Coalition Walk
Toufic Kachaamy, Chief of Medicine and Medical Director of Gastroenterology at City of Hope Phoenix, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Raising Awareness at the Colon Cancer Coalition Walk: The Power of Family History in Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer”
“At a recent Colon Cancer Coalition walk, I had the opportunity to speak about an often-overlooked yet critical factor in tackling colorectal cancer in young adults: family history of high-risk colonic polyps.”
“While genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome are well-known risk factors, many people don’t realize that having a first-degree relative with advanced adenomas or large serrated lesions also significantly increases their risk. Unfortunately, family history of high-risk polyps is often undocumented or unknown—leading to missed opportunities for earlier screening and prevention.”
Key Message:
- Colorectal cancer is no longer just an older adult disease.
- If you have a family history of high-risk polyps, you may need screening before the standard recommended age.
- Early detection saves lives, and knowledge is power.
“Let’s continue spreading awareness, advocating for proactive screening, and encouraging open family discussions about colorectal health.”
“A big thank you to the Colon Cancer Coalition and everyone who participated in the walk—together, we are making a difference!”
