Tilly Metz speaks from the European Parliament – The healthcare workforce crisis can no longer be ignored
“Today, together with my colleague MEP Andras Kulja MD, I had the honor of hosting over 30 national medical associations in the European Parliament to tackle one of the most pressing issues
healthcare workforce crisis in Europe.
Healthcare systems across Europe are grappling with severe staffing shortages of doctors, nurses and other professionals. The consequences of this crisis are severe:
- Declining quality of care.
- Longer waiting times and reduced access for patients.
- Widening health inequalities.
- Increased costs for healthcare systems.
- Mental and physical strain on healthcare professionals.
Coming from Luxembourg — a country with the highest doctor shortage in the EU — I know this isn’t a problem confined to one region or economy. It affects rich and poor countries alike.
The solution? More cooperation, less competition.” – Tilly Metz, Member of the European Parliament, shared a post on LinkedIn.
I’m proud to say that the European Parliament is stepping up. I will be working on a dedicated report to tackle this crisis head-on on behalf of The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament. I want to focus on:
- Better working conditions, fair pay, and continuous training.
- Stronger enforcement of health and safety regulations.
- A dedicated EU directive on mental health and psychosocial risks.
- Closing the underinvestment gap — prioritizing public healthcare.
- Responsible digitalization that supports and do not burdens.
- Coordinated EU-wide workforce planning and retention policies.
Healthcare professionals are the backbone of our systems — they deserve fair conditions, safety, and respect. We must ensure caring for those who care for us becomes a top priority across the Union.
