Thomas Hartung, Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, posted on LinkedIn:
“NIH announces end to funding for animal-only studies!!!
In an an official statement made by Dr. Nicole Kleinstreuer, Acting NIH Deputy Director for Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives, this announcement was delivered during the FDA and NIH Workshop on Reducing Animal Testing, where Dr. Kleinstreuer stated:
“NIH will no longer seek proposals exclusively for animal models. All new NIH funding opportunities moving forward should incorporate language on consideration of NAMS New Approach Methodologies.”
This policy change was publicly reported on July 7, 2025, and is covered in detail by several reputable science and industry news outlets, such as Drug Discovery Trends, the Washington Examiner, and by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
This is a most forceful steps toward human-relevant biomedical research announced by a visionary colleague and friend.”
