The Institute of Cancer Research – Help more women like Sonia survive cancer
The Institute of Cancer Research shared on LinkedIn:
“‘Cancer research is the reason I am here. I’ve been able to make informed choices that sadly weren’t an option for my mum’
Sonia was just 14 when she lost her mum to secondary breast cancer. Then at the age of 28, she found a malignant lump in her own breast. She subsequently discovered that she carries the BRCA2 gene mutation, putting her at an increased risk of developing various cancers.
Having witnessed her mum’s cancer journey, Sonia was shocked to receive her own breast cancer diagnosis. Terrified of playing out her mum’s story, she was filled with thoughts of dying.
However, following six months of gruelling chemotherapy and surgery, she is thankfully well eight years on from her diagnosis – and has lots to look forward to.
Sonia believes she is still here thanks to new research and developments that have taken place since her mum’s diagnosis. And she feels optimistic about the future.
As we mark 29 years today since ICR scientists identified the BRCA2 gene, please give the gift of research this Christmas and donate to our appeal to help more women like Sonia survive cancer.”
