Terisa Tamang: Our Mental Health is Actually Written in Our DNA
Terisa Tamang, Founder, President and Counselor of Dhairya Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“You think it’s all in the mind? But our mental health is actually written in our DNA!
I had a presentation where I had researched on this topic and presented it and I would like to share a glimpse with you all.
Mental health is not just about what we feel emotionally it’s also deeply connected with our biology.
We inherit 50% of our genes from our mother and 50% from our father, and these genes play a major role in shaping how we feel, think, and behave. Mental illnesses like Schizophrenia (70-85%), Bipolar Disorder (60–70%), and ADHD (74–80%) are strongly influenced by genetic factors.
But it’s also important to understand that our lifestyle and environment play a significant role in the development of mental disorders.
So, to understand and care for our mental well-being, we need to understand both genes and life experiences.”
