Tanja Spanic: I was grateful for the opportunity to bring the patient voice to the session

Tanja Spanic, Secretary General (Executive Officer) at Europa Donna Slovenija, shared on LinkedIn:

“So honoured to be here at ESTRO 2025. For my first talk at this congress, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with such incredible experts – and friends – Matteo Lambertini, Isabel T. Rubio, and Icro Meattini.

Our session focused on a topic closest to my heart: Breast Cancer in Young Patients. We explored key challenges for young BRCA carriers – fertility, pregnancy, surgical decisions, radiotherapy – and, most importantly, the critical need to include the patient perspective in every step of care.

I was grateful for the opportunity to bring the patient voice to the session. Behind each clinical decision is a young woman facing breast cancer – with dreams, fears, and her whole life ahead of her.

As patient advocates, we aim to make our advocacy evidence-based. I had the chance to share highlights from a global survey on the unmet needs of young women with breast cancer, led by the Young Survival Coalition – a project I supported from concept through development.

In the final minutes of the session, I also introduced the Artillery Project, where Europa Donna Slovenija is a proud consortium partner. After a brief presentation, I invited oncologists to contribute by completing our survey and supporting our PhD candidate Frederik Voigt Carstensen from Denmark – every response helps move the research forward!

A very warm congratulations to Isabel T. Rubio on receiving the ESTRO Honorary Member Award – so well deserved for her outstanding dedication to breast cancer care and advocacy!

Thank you European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) for the invitation!”
