Suzette DiMascio: I reflect on a moment that changed my life – and helped save another

Suzette DiMascio, Senior Director, Health System Strategy at Evernorth Health Services, shared on LinkedIn:

“Every Easter, I reflect on a moment that changed my life – and helped save another.
It was the week before Easter in 2022 when I received an urgent email from a colleague. His 9-year-old nephew, Ben, had just been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. The family had been told there were only months left.
I immediately turned to my network in oncology, hoping—praying—for a lifeline.
And prayerfully, that lifeline came. My dear friend, Jordan Johnson, (who seems to know everyone in the oncology world) quickly identified a potential clinical trial. Within days, Ben was en route to Ohio.
Timing is everything in oncology. During Ben’s clinical workup, the team not only confirmed his eligibility – but also discovered his tumor was operable. It was nothing short of an Easter miracle.
Ben underwent successful surgery, completed the clinical trial, and today he’s a thriving 13-year-old—playing basketball, laughing with friends, and, at last report earlier this year, has no residual tumor.
I share this story each year as a reminder of the power of our professional networks—and our responsibility as healthcare leaders to use them for good. Sometimes, we are the bridge between despair and hope.
Had his uncle not reached out… had I not known Jordan… had the trial not been open that very week… this story might have ended very differently.
I’m humbled to have played even a small role in Ben’s journey – and I can’t wait to see the impact he makes in the world.”

“This is what healthcare and the network are all about!
I was honored just to get the call and help where I could. Thank you Suzette DiMascio for being who you are!
Here is the story.”
