The opening of the world’s largest pediatric cancer center at NCMC in Shanghai – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

“St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is proud to be part of a historic moment—the opening of the world’s largest pediatric cancer center at the National Children’s Medical Center (NCMC) in Shanghai. With 500 in-patient beds, including 350 dedicated to pediatric cancer, this state-of-the-art facility represents a major step forward for childhood cancer treatment in China.
Ching-Hon Pui, MD, Director, China Region, for St. Jude Global, has been instrumental in shaping the standard of care for leukemia in China for over 30 years. In 2012, he convinced China central government to approve the development of National Children’s Medical Center for patient care, research and education, modeled after St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Shanghai government to build the center. His efforts in sharing groundbreaking research and treatment protocols have improved outcomes for children with leukemia and influenced national health policies. He spoke at the opening alongside Chinese dignitaries, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Pui was joined at the opening by St. Jude colleagues Jinghui Zhang, PhD, who also spoke at the celebration; Charles Roberts, MD, PhD; Melissa Hudson, MD, and Jun Yang, PhD.
“It has been wonderful to see the impact that the long-standing collaboration between Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has brought for children with cancer in China. Cure rates have improved markedly for children with ALL, and are improving for other cancer types too,” said Roberts when he returned from the trip. “There has been remarkable progress at SCMC including the establishment of the first National Children’s Medical Center in China. Looking forward it will be exciting to continue the collaboration as we have the potential to learn from their experiences with CAR-T cells and other studies too. Our collective efforts at both institutions have the real potential to improve outcomes for children with a wide range of cancer types.”
St. Jude has a long-standing partnership with SCMC, and we’re excited to continue working together to advance treatment and improve survival rates. The recent 5th St. Jude-VIVA-NCMC Forum brought together experts from around the globe to share the latest advances in pediatric oncology. This collaboration has been vital, as Pui helped form the China National ALL Study Group in 2014, chairs its scientific advisor board, and is involved in designing clinical trials. China enrolls approximately 2,000 newly diagnosed childhood leukemia patients annually in these trials.
