Françoise Meunier Supports Parliamentary Action by MEPs Sophie Wilmès and Olivier Chastel for Cancer Survivors’ Rights

Françoise Meunier, Founder of the European Initiative on Ending Discrimination Against Cancer Survivors, Vice-President at Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On 2 April, MEP Sophie Wilmès (Renew, Belgium) and MEP Olivier Chastel (Renew, Belgium) submitted a Parliamentary Question to the European Commission, spotlighting the financial discrimination cancer survivors often face, years or even decades after being declared cured by their oncologist. They ask the Commission what they have planned to address this issue.
While over 20 million Europeans are living beyond cancer, many still face unfair barriers when applying for loans, insurance, or mortgages, not due to medical risk, but persistent stigma. This prevents them from realising their personal and professional aspirations, even when they beat cancer.
Today, in the EU, only 9 EU Member States have binding legislation to protect survivors through the right to be forgotten. That is not enough. To ensure cancer survivors are protected from financial discrimination, it is crucial that the EU enacts binding legislation that reflects the latest medical advancements and applies to all European citizens equally.
I thank MEP Wilmès and MEP Chastel for standing up for dignity, equality, and the right to rebuild a life after cancer – and look forward to the answer of the European Commission.
Read the question here.”
