Shrenik Shah: What’s one decision your memory keeps making for you?
Shrenik Shah, Patient Ambassador and Moderator of Fridays with Shrenik Live webinar at Indian Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“35,000 decisions.
That’s how many we make every single day. But here’s the catch, many of them aren’t based on logic. They’re based on memory.
Let me explain with a simple story.
Imagine a person who once choked while public speaking in school. Even two decades later, they avoid stages—not because they can’t do it,
but because their memory has made a decision for them.
Now let me tell you mine.
Twenty seven years ago, during my battle with cancer, I went through a particularly painful treatment phase. The pain wasn’t just physical—it left mental residue. Months later, even as I began to recover, I noticed I would say no to simple routines—long walks, certain foods, social gatherings.
Not because I couldn’t. But because my memory had labelled them unsafe. It took conscious unlearning to break that loop.
Memory is powerful. But if we’re not careful, it becomes a silent decision-maker. Here’s what helped me take the wheel back:
1. Awareness – Ask: “Is this my fear speaking, or a real limitation?”
2. Reframing – Replace the memory’s conclusion with a fresh one through new experiences.
3. Coaching and community – External perspectives can show you where your memory may be wrong.
Every day, you have a choice: To let your past decide your present…Or to gently rewrite your narrative, one decision at a time.
What’s one decision your memory keeps making for you?”
