Shona Edwards: Not one size fits all – protecting all people in cancer care
Shona Edwards, Cancer Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I appreciated the opportunity to present at Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA)’s ASM this week on a plenary panel titled ‘Not one size fits all: protecting all people in cancer care.’
I argued that just as all people with disabilities should have equitable access to optimal cancer care, people with cancer should have equitable access to optimal disability care.
In this work I use my own experiences as a case study on the barriers to access to NDIS and the Disability Support Pension for people with cancer.
Disability is a paradigm shift for how we view all equity issues. Every type of oppression, race, class and gender, the violence of each quite literally disables us. Oppression physically and psychologically harms us.
Disability helps you look at issues in terms of power, intimacy, care and interdependency.
On a panel about cancer in prisons, domestic violence and class and culture difference, disability has an intersection with each of those experiences. One word that was repeated throughout the panel was justice.”
