Sendurai Mani: Uncovering What Nature Already Knows Through Research
Sendurai Mani, Associate Director of Translational Oncology at Legorreta Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Uncovering What Nature Already Knows Through Research
Research is a journey into the unknown, uncovering truths that nature already knows but we haven’t discovered yet. While curiosity drives this journey, it takes much more to move science forward.
In addition to curiosity, a successful researcher needs:
- Resilience – to navigate setbacks, failures, and long timelines
- Collaboration – especially across disciplines, where innovation thrives
- Mentorship – both giving and receiving guidance at every career stage
- Securing funding – a critical (and often overlooked) skill in sustaining research
- Persistence – through rejections, grant denials, and experiments that fail
- Adaptability – to shift approaches as new data or technologies emerge
- Time management – balancing research, teaching, writing, and admin duties
- Communication skills – to share findings clearly with both peers and the public
Because in research, curiosity is just the beginning – the rest is learned, earned, and shared.”
