Samyukta Mullangi: The goals of Tennessee Oncology Practice Society
Samyukta Mullangi, Medical Oncologist at Tennessee Oncology and Medical Director at Thyme Care, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This year, I became president of the Tennessee Oncology Practice Society (TOPS) – which is both the local chapter of ASCO’s State Affiliate Council, and the oncology state society for ACCC (lots of acronyms).
The goals of TOPS are threefold:
- Advocate for the interests of the Tennessee Oncology community through focused policy and legislative activity,
- Offer educational opportunities and a platform for Tennessee Oncology leaders, and
- Build a community within oncology in Tennessee.
Within the TN legislature just this spring, we have:
- backed a bill to eliminate insurance step therapy requirements for patients with metastatic cancer (where time is most precious).
- backed a bill to increase payer coverage for biomarker testing (an increasingly important element of modern precision medicine in oncology!).
- co-signed with ASCO on a bill to increase fertility coverage and egg-freezing options for patients with cancer (egg-freezing often denied to patients who don’t already have an infertility diagnosis, though their upcoming chemo will possibly lead to this)
I am so proud of our small but mighty policy and advocacy sub-committee – Kate Baker, Richard Martin, Debbie Skojac, Carolyn Kelsey, Holly Bushart, and our fearless lobbyist Courtney Atnip.
Next up is our annual conference on April 5 at the Omni Nashville Hotel! More details coming soon.”
