Sami (Papacek) Mansfield: 1 in 3 long-term prostate cancer survivors is frail
Sami (Papacek) Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“1 in 3 long-term prostate cancer survivors is frail.
And it’s impacting quality of life, emotional health, and survival.
Frailty isn’t just about aging—it’s about vulnerability.
Vulnerability to complications.
Vulnerability to mental health struggles.
Vulnerability to reduced survival.
A nationwide study of 2,979 prostate cancer survivors uncovered critical insights:
- 33.1% were classified as frail (with worse outcomes across the board).
- Frail patients were twice as likely to experience depression and anxiety.
- Quality of life was significantly lower for those struggling with frailty.
The key takeaway? Frailty isn’t just a geriatric issue—it’s an oncology issue.
What needs to change?
Routine frailty screening for prostate cancer survivors.
Better integration of geriatricians + psychologists into cancer care.
More research-driven interventions to improve mental and physical well-being.
But there’s something else we can’t ignore:
Exercise and proper nutrition (especially adequate protein intake) are key weapons against frailty.
Resistance training helps maintain muscle mass.
Higher protein intake supports strength and recovery.
Daily movement reduces the risk of both physical and cognitive decline.
For healthcare professionals: Are we emphasizing the role of exercise and nutrition enough in cancer survivorship?
For survivors and caregivers: What are your biggest challenges in staying active and eating well?
Yet another reason why www.mylifestyleshift.com is growing—helping people take control of their health through movement, nutrition, and smarter lifestyle choices!”
