Sami Mansfield: Survival matters – but so does how we live
Sami Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Survival matters – but so does how we live.
In healthcare, we often emphasize survival data – how long people live after a diagnosis, how treatments extend life. But what about how well people live during and after treatment?
This is where healthspan and lifespan come into play.
- Lifespan is how long we live.
- Healthspan is how many of those years are lived in good health, free from disease and disability.
Across the globe, the gap between these two is nearly a decade – but in the U.S., it’s over 12 years. That means many people are living longer, but not necessarily better.
‘At the end of the day, the question isn’t just ‘How long can we live?’ – it’s ‘How well can we live?’ ‘
This is exactly why I’m thrilled to share another one post of Small Steps, Big Living – a Lifestyle Medicine Series with OncoDaily – to shift the focus beyond survival and toward thriving.
In my latest blog, I explore what this means for cancer survivors, the growing burden of chronic disease, and how small, sustainable lifestyle changes can help close this healthspan-lifespan gap.
