Sahar Mansour Emphasizes Clarity in BI-RADS Breast Imaging Reporting
Sahar Mansour, Professor of Radiology Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital, Cairo University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“BI-RADS Reporting: Keep It Clear and Professional!
When interpreting breast imaging, clarity is key. Assigning one BI-RADS category per breast is the recommended approach it streamlines reporting, ensures consistency, and avoids confusion in management.
Attached Example Screenshot: This shows an impression where different BI-RADS categories were assigned to each abnormality—something to avoid.
What’s the best practice?
-
Single BI-RADS per breast in the impression.
-
Describe individual abnormalities separately in the detailed report with their respective BI-RADS categories (if needed)—but not in the impression!
Why should you avoid multiple BI-RADS assessments in the impression?
-
It complicates follow-up recommendations.
-
It may lead to patient anxiety due to uncertainty she belongs to which category.
-
It lacks standardization and can be misinterpreted by the physician and confusion to get proper MDT decision.
Bottom Line: Keep reporting standardized, stick to one BI-RADS category per breast for a professional, clear, and effective report.”
