Sachin Jain: Are you John? Or are you Sally?

Sachin Jain, President and CEO, Board Director at SCAN Health Plan, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One of the most commonly observed and least discussed corporate behaviors is credit theft or credit misattribtion.

Let’s consider a scenario in which an employee named John does the work and his senior leader, Sally, presents it.

John is told his role is to be a team player and that Sally is his ‘executive sponsor’ and his job is defined as supporting Sally’s success. Sally doesn’t even reference John in her presentations. Sally is recognized and promoted.

Over time, the company evolves a culture where there are people who ‘do’ the work and a whole other group of people who ‘present’ the work in broader forums (to customers, to senior leaders, to external stakeholders).

Over time, John gets used to being a supporting player in the background and Sally receiving credit for his work

OR

John gets frustrated and leaves because the company culture ignores the very basic and human need to be recognized for one’s contributions.

An alternate culture is one where John presents the work and John is recognized for his contributions and Sally is recognized for cultivating and supporting John’s talents (yes, there are companies where this is the norm!).

My hypothesis is that the latter is far healthier, but the former is far more common.

I’ve lived through both and they are very different.

What kinds of cultures of credit have you experienced in your career? What worked and what didn’t?

Are you John? Or are you Sally?”
