Wade Swenson: June 4th is Rural Cancer Awareness Day
Wade Swenson, Program Manager at ACCC and Founder of Rural Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“June 4th, is Rural Cancer Awareness Day — officially recognized by governors in Kansas (2023), Minnesota (2023), North Dakota (2024), Texas (2024), West Virginia (2024), Wisconsin (2024), South Carolina (2025), Idaho (2025), Missouri (2025), Pennsylvania (2025), and North Carolina (2025).
Rural cancer patients often navigate significant challenges: long travel distances to treatment, limited access to specialists, and financial obstacles that may delay or disrupt care. Yet, these barriers are not insurmountable.
Through care coordination between local providers and tertiary centers, adherence to evidence-based quality standards, access to palliative care, and robust nursing and financial navigation, we can close gaps and bring high-quality cancer care closer to home.”
