Roupen Odabashian: How AI is Helping Democratize Scientific Communication
Roupen Odabashian, Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Karmanos Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:
“How AI is helping democratize scientific communication
As researchers and physicians, we often rely on expensive tools with monthly subscriptions to create high-quality images for our papers and presentations. But what if you could break free from that?
Over the past two days, I collaborated with GP4 to create custom, publication-ready scientific illustrations – without premium software.
Using ChatGPT, I generated original icons of cancer cells, T cells, antibodies, and receptors. With a few tweaks, we removed backgrounds, adjusted styles, and produced professional-quality assets.
Then, with free Canva, I combined these AI-generated icons, added subtle backgrounds and variations in cell shapes, and turned them into a full research illustration for our upcoming paper.
The best part? We weren’t restricted to pre-made third-party icons. We literally built every element from scratch – specific antibody shapes, receptor designs, dying cancer cells – all customized for our story.
This experience made me realize how AI can democratize scientific communication, giving researchers the power to create professional visuals without heavy costs or design experience.
If AI + Canva can do this for one paper, imagine what it can do for global knowledge sharing.”
