Renato Ong: ICOS-Philippines Takes Flight—A Milestone in Philippine Cardio-Oncology
Renato Ong, Co Executive Director at International Cardio-Oncology Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“April 26, 2025 – the Philippine medical community witnessed a momentous and transformative event with the successful inauguration of the International Cardio-Oncology Society – Philippines (ICOS-Ph) at the Makati Diamond Residences.
The event was attended by an impressive assembly of over 20 distinguished medical specialists, predominantly comprising cardiologists, cardio-oncologists, hematologists, and medical oncologists. The substantial presence of these experts exemplifies a shared and powerful commitment to addressing the critical cardiovascular needs of cancer patients and underscores the increasing recognition of cardio-oncology as a vital and burgeoning field within Philippine healthcare through multifaceted, interdisciplinary collaboration.
The establishment of ICOS-Ph represents a significant advancement in the nation’s endeavors to integrate cardiovascular and oncological care. As cancer survivorship rates continue to ascend, the concomitant burden of cardiovascular disease in these patients necessitates a unified, multidisciplinary approach. ICOS-Ph was conceived in response to this pressing need, aiming to foster collaboration, spearhead innovative research, advocate for patient-centric care, and develop clinical guidelines tailored to the Filipino population. The ceremony was not only a reflection of past achievements but a resounding proclamation of ICOS-Ph’s bold ambitions. The event resonated with the fervor of pioneers united by a shared vision — to harmonize the fields of cardiology and oncology for the greater good.
The strategic direction for the coming year, articulated through the CARE pillars — Collaboration, Advocacy, Research, and Education — encapsulates the society’s comprehensive approach to addressing the unique cardiovascular needs of cancer patients. These pillars are not mere words but a roadmap to a future where the synergy between cardiologists, oncologists, and allied health professionals transforms patient outcomes on a global scale.
The launch event transcended mere celebration; it emerged as a clarion call to collective action—a call to bridge disciplines, dismantle silos, and position the Filipino patient at the epicenter of all endeavors. With ICOS-Ph now firmly established, the future of cardio-oncology in the Philippines gleams with promise, heralding a new epoch where the cardiovascular health of every cancer patient and survivor is safeguarded with unwavering dedication and expertise.
As cancer and cardiovascular disease continue to be formidable global health challenges, the formation of ICOS-Ph is more than the inception of an organization; it is a pioneering movement. Together, we advance — for the heart, for the fight against cancer, and for the Filipino people. The promise of a brighter, healthier future beckons, and with ICOS-Ph at the helm, that future is within reach. Because survivors deserve a strong heart!”
