Highlights from ASH 2024 by Rahul Banerjee

The 66th American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition was held from December 7th-10th, 2024, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

The ASH annual meeting served as a major gathering for hematology professionals, attracting over 28,000 attendees, including clinicians, scientists, and researchers from across the globe. This meeting was the world’s largest and most comprehensive hematology event of the year.

With hundreds of sessions covering the latest trends in hematology, ASH provided attendees with numerous opportunities to engage with cutting-edge research and developments. Education Program sessions featured didactic presentations, panel discussions, and interactive question-and-answer segments with all the speakers. The event stood out as the premier gathering for hematology professionals worldwide.

Rahul Banerjee, Assistant professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at the University of Washington, Shared some highlights from the Conference:

Doris Hansen presenting the most sophisticated analysis

ASH24 and the best for last! Our fearless US MM consortium leader Doris Hansen presenting the most sophisticated analysis of cilta-cel vs ide-cel in RW practice I’ve ever seen! Yes, an RCT will be ideal – but will never happen this decade.

So what do our current data show?”

ASH24 and the latest and greatest down with dex abstract

ASH24 and the latest and greatest down with dex abstract in myeloma yet! Congrats Dr. Manier et al for excellent IFM 2017-03 study! Dara WAY more important than dex in MM – survival benefit with DR vs Rd. Default with dex should be to stop after 2 months!”

ASH kudos

ASH kudos to ASH for raising the most fit hematologists the world has ever known.”

ASH kudos to Ciara Freeman

ASH kudos to Ciara Freeman for leading one of the most exciting orals of ASH24! Phase 2 trial of anito-cel as likely next BCMA CAR-T to get approved.

Setting stage – reminding us how different the CAR looks and how study was designed. Only 1 out of 118 manuf failures!”\

Myeloma field don’t squint at PET images

ASH24 we in myeloma field don’t squint at PET images as much as our lymphoma colleagues… maybe soon we’ll have to! FASCINATING radiolabeling of cilta-cel in vivo for EMD MM by Harrison et al. Caught on camera: CAR T cells accumulating around EMD trying to break in.”

Cilta-cel in high-risk SMM

ASH24 fascinating to see Omar Nadeem, Irenem Ghobrial and colleagues pull it off again!

Last year teclistamab, this year cilta-cel in high-risk SMM. 100% MRD-neg, very likely a curative approach to these patients. More follow-up and careful risk-benefit discussions needed!”

Doris Hansen co-leading our US myeloma consortium

“ASH24 thanks Doris Hansen for co-leading our US myeloma consortium – we are grateful to you Surbhi Sidana, Krina Patel for your wisdom! Doris isn’t on Twitter but she’s somehow always looking over my shoulder when I’m live-tweeting.”
