Women, Power and Cancer: Turning Evidence into Action – UICC
Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Lancet Commission’s landmark report on Women, Power, and Cancer, is challenging conventional frameworks by revealing that cancer is not just a biomedical issue but one deeply rooted in social structures.
Building on the findings, UICC launched an online course for its members, supporting a diverse, global cohort of professionals to advocate for and implement gender-responsive reforms in cancer policy and planning.
The report found that 2.3 million women die prematurely from cancer each year. Of these, 1.5 million deaths could be prevented through primary prevention or early detection, while 800,000 more could be avoided if all women had access to optimal cancer care.
Find out more about the key takeaways from the course.”
Hayley Jones, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Law and Noncommunicable Disease and Director of the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, shared this post, adding:
“It was a joy to work on this course on Women, Power and Cancer with the amazing Commissioners, UICC, and a range of supportive organisations.
Law is a powerful tool for challenging structural injustice – but only if we equip people to use it. In this course, we aimed to show how legal and policy frameworks can be harnessed to address gender inequities in cancer.
What’s been most rewarding is seeing participants begin to apply these insights to their own work: shaping reform plans, interrogating workplace norms, and advocating for change. This course is not just about knowledge, it’s about mobilisation — and the energy and commitment we’ve seen gives real hope for the future.”
