A Collaborative Beginning
The Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) Group was established in 2013 as a collaborative platform for healthcare professionals from various countries in the East and Mediterranean region. Its mission is to share experiences, initiate cooperative trials, and develop common strategies to optimize care for pediatric oncology patients.
As of July 2020, POEM’s membership spans 28 countries including Afghanistan, Armenia, Egypt, India, Lebanon, Turkey, India, and many others. Through its efforts, POEM aims to address disparities in cancer care access and improve survival rates for children with cancer across these regions.
Milestones and Achievements
Over the past 12 years, POEM has achieved several significant milestones:
- Expansion of Membership: POEM now encompasses members from 28 countries, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Egypt, India, Lebanon, Turkey, and many others, fostering a diverse and collaborative network.
- Scientific Meetings: The group has successfully organized four scientific meetings, with the latest held from May 1 to 3, 2025, in Amman, Jordan. These gatherings have been pivotal in sharing knowledge, discussing challenges, and setting future directions for pediatric oncology in the region.
- Educational Initiatives: POEM has been instrumental in conducting training programs and workshops aimed at enhancing the skills of healthcare professionals involved in pediatric cancer care.
Looking Ahead
As POEM celebrates this 12-year milestone, the group remains steadfast in its mission to improve pediatric oncology care through collaboration, research, and education. Future initiatives include expanding telemedicine services, increasing access to clinical trials, and further integrating psychosocial support into treatment plans.
“We must unite because kids with cancer cannot fight it alone!” – Gevorg Tamamyan, President of POEM
The journey of the POEM Group exemplifies the profound impact of regional collaboration in addressing complex health challenges. Their story is a testament to what can be achieved when communities unite with compassion, expertise, and a shared vision for a healthier future for all children.
