“Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s Bold Commitment to Cervical Cancer Elimination: A Statement from MWIA President

The Medical Women’s International Association is a global Association of female medical doctors working to promote health for all throughout the world with particular interest in women’s health ,research and development.

On behalf of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA), I wish to warmly commend the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her bold and magnanimous donation of $700,000 towards the elimination of cervical cancer in Nigeria. This contribution, made through her Renewed Hope Initiative, is not just a financial commitment – it is a powerful statement of leadership, compassion, and determination to change the course of women’s health on the continent.

As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria’s leadership in health initiatives carries continental weight. With the recent rollout of the HPV vaccine for girls aged 9–14, and now this gold-standard intervention by the First Lady, Nigeria is sending a strong message: eliminating cervical cancer in Africa is possible – and it begins with political will.

Countries in the global north are already on track to eliminate cervical cancer, and in Africa, Rwanda has shown what is possible through sustained investment in HPV vaccination and screening. Now, Nigeria is stepping into the spotlight, setting an example for the region.

This is a call to action to all African First Ladies: the time to act is now. Your voice, your advocacy, and your leadership are critical in ensuring that no woman dies from a disease that is entirely preventable. Let us work together, across borders and sectors, to ensure that cervical cancer becomes a disease of the past.

Together, we can drive Africa toward a future where every girl is protected, and every woman has access to life-saving prevention and care.

Dr Eleanor Ann Nwadinobi,
President,
Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA)”

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, Chief Executive Officer at Medicaid Cancer Foundation, shared Medical Women’s International Association’s post on LinkedIn:

“Indeed the Nigerian First Lady has moved the needle for cervical cancer elimination. Amidst current global crisis in health, persons in positions of power, influence and authority can and should never shy away from using the platform to mobilize resources for social causes.”
