Norman Ng: Fix the subsidy mismatch so more patients from middle-income families can receive subsidies
Norman Ng, Director of Patient Advocacy and Public Affairs at Healthcare Thinkers, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Fix the subsidy mismatch and hope that more patients from middle-income families can receive subsidies!
The Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital Authority, Dr Patrick Ko, pointed out that many patients with major diseases such as cancer have to face very high drug costs.
According to the data, about 50,000 patients need to pay for the medicine out of their own pockets, but in reality, many patients choose not to receive treatment due to concerns about the high cost of treatment.
As a result, the actual number of out-of-pocket patients far exceeds this figure. Of these 50,000 patients, about 30,000 are fully self-paying, and more than 2,000 patients have to pay more than 100,000 yuan, and some of them even have medical expenses close to one million yuan!”
