National Doctors’ Day: Recognizing the Heroes of Healthcare

Every year on March 30, we take a moment to recognize and appreciate the doctors who dedicate their lives to healing, researching, and pushing the boundaries of medicine. National Doctors’ Day is a chance to say thank you to those who work tirelessly—often sacrificing their own time and well-being—to care for others.

A Bit of History

National Doctors’ Day was first observed in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, thanks to Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, who wanted to honor the doctors in her community. She chose March 30 because, on this day in 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long used ether anesthesia for the first time, revolutionizing surgery.

The idea gained momentum, and by 1958, Congress recognized the day with an official resolution. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed it into law, making March 30 a nationally recognized day of appreciation for doctors across the U.S.

Why This Day Matters

Doctors are the foundation of healthcare. They’re the ones who diagnose, treat, and comfort, whether in hospitals, research labs, or emergency zones. Their work isn’t limited to their shift; it continues long after, with an impact that stretches far beyond individual patients.

In fields like oncology, doctors are more than just caregivers—they’re leading research, developing new treatments, and giving hope to millions. Their work helps shape the future of medicine, and their dedication to saving lives and advancing science is something we should never take for granted. The long hours, hard work, and passion they put into their profession have a profound effect, not just on patients, but on society as a whole. Their contributions are invaluable, and we owe them a great deal of respect and gratitude.

The Growing Role of Women in Medicine

One of the most significant shifts in healthcare over the years has been the rise of women in medicine. Between 2004 and 2022, the number of women in the physician workforce nearly doubled (a 97% increase), while the number of male doctors grew by just 13%.

  • In 2004, women made up 26% of all doctors. By 2022, that number had grown to 38% (371,851 women physicians).
  • Meanwhile, the percentage of male doctors dropped from 74% to 62%.

This progress is huge—not just for gender equality but for healthcare as a whole. A diverse physician workforce means better patient care, more perspectives in medical research, and a stronger healthcare system overall.

A Simple Thank You Goes a Long Way

Doctors work long hours, make tough decisions, and carry the weight of their patients’ lives on their shoulders. National Doctors’ Day is a chance for all of us to show our appreciation. Whether it’s a thank-you note, a kind word, or a simple message of gratitude, it makes a difference.

To all the doctors out there—especially those in oncology, who fight cancer every day—thank you for your dedication, your compassion, and your relentless pursuit of better healthcare.

National Doctors' Day: Recognizing the Heroes of Healthcare

Across the U.S., numerous organizations, communities, and individuals are celebrating this important day. Here are some highlights from social media that showcase the enthusiasm surrounding National Doctors’ Day:

Sachin H. Jain:

“Every year we celebrate, ‘Doctors Day.’

And every year, I get a few grumbling messages from my physician colleagues about how many ‘doctors’ day’ efforts at hospitals and health systems miss the mark.

I shared my thoughts on this topic previously in Forbes.

What are your thoughts on Doctors Day?”

Jae Won Joh:

“Bill Gates just predicted AI will replace doctors within a decade… mere days before National Doctors’ Day. How thoughtful.

I’ve got just one question: who’s taking on the liability?

I’ve diligenced over 100 healthcare AI companies; I could count on one hand—with fingers to spare—those willing to assume ANY medicolegal responsibility. The replies are uniform:

‘Our solution ensures integrity by having a human in the loop.’

Buddy, I speak corporate. That’s ‘the doctor still carries all the risk.’

Can we acknowledge it’s a little inconsistent for your marketing team to claim your AI is ‘equal to’ or ‘better than’ trained clinicians while your legal team drafts contracts ensuring all medicolegal burden falls on…those same clinicians?

For most physicians already battling burnout, the math is clear: more ‘efficiency’ means seeing more patients; more patients means expanded liability; expanded liability means increased risk to livelihood and license.

And let’s be honest—healthcare organizations where physicians feel safe taking on that increased risk? Vanishingly few in number.

You won’t find that sobering reality in glossy investor decks.

I’m not against innovation at all—I’m on an innovation team! But when billions are pouring into healthcare AI with negligible allocation for inevitable legal challenges, healthcare isn’t being ‘disrupted’, risk is being pushed onto the very professionals being ‘supported’.

The scales need to tip in the opposite direction. Physicians carry enough anxiety about their careers without wondering when their next AI-assisted lawsuit will arrive.

If you’re serious about transforming healthcare with AI, strategize about how you’ll help front-line clinicians manage the risks you present. It shows you’re willing to put your money where your mouth is, and you’ll find a more receptive audience when you’re proactive.

Thoughts? Am I off base? Let’s discuss!”
