Natalia Baran: Pioneering Research on Targeting Mitochondria to Combat Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Natalia Baran, Leading Attending and Assistant Professor at the University Hospital Department of Hematology at Insel Group, posted on LinkedIn:
“A team led by Natalia Kirienko at Rice University is pioneering a new approach to combat acute myeloid leukemia (AML), one of the deadliest blood cancers. By targeting the cancer cells’ energy-producing mitochondria —disrupted by the rapid growth of AML cells—the research aims to selectively kill cancer cells without harming healthy blood cells.
Collaborating with experts from Switzerland and the University of Houston, the team is developing personalized drug combinations tested in mouse models, with the goal of offering safer, more effective treatments. This innovative work, supported by a high-impact CPRIT grant, offers new hope for AML patients, especially those resistant to standard therapies.
Congratulations dear Natalia Kirienko on receiving this prestigious grant.
