Duncan Anderson: The Web Version of NanCI is Now LIVE

Duncan Anderson, Founder of Barnacle Labs, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The web version of NanCI, developed by our team at Barnacle Labs in collaboration with the USA’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Google Cloud, is now LIVE!
Why This Matters:
With over 500 publications on cancer research published DAILY, staying current is humanly impossible. This is where NanCI steps in – not as “an AI app” but as a solution that happens to leverage AI brilliantly behind the scenes.
How NanCI Revolutionises Research:
  •  Personalised Discovery: Create folders of papers you care about, and NanCI learns your interests (by reading both the papers themselves and the description you give to a folder), finding new relevant publications automatically. It even provides a personalised narrative explaining why each paper might be valuable to you.
  • Smart Visualisation: NanCI transforms dense academic content into accessible insights. AI-generated illustrations bring paper titles to life (doing this in a way that eliminates the risk of inappropriate content was a non-trivial task that required a high degree of ingenuity), while machine learning extracts key medical terms and takeaways, making complex research approachable even for early-career scientists.
  • Intelligent Exploration: NanCI’s ‘explore’ mode presents extracted insights alongside original source text, with an AI chat feature that lets you interview the paper itself with your questions.
  • Community Building: NanCI uses AI to match you with researchers sharing similar interests, facilitating connections that could spark the next breakthrough collaboration.
Virtually every feature in NanCI uses AI behind the scenes to personalise the experience, make complex information more intelligible and help build connections between scientists.
This project represents what I’m most passionate about: using advanced technology to solve real human problems without making the technology itself the focus. It’s not about AI – it’s about giving researchers superpowers to navigate the overwhelming volume of cancer research, and we just happen to use AI to do that.
We’d love to hear your thoughts or answer questions about our approach!”
