Miriam Mutebi: What Does it Really Mean to Build a Research Career in Africa?

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What does it really mean to build a research career in Africa?

→ Yesterday, we kicked off the Pre-Conference Workshop for the Basic and Translational Cancer Research Symposium, hosted by AORTIC- Africa in collaboration with the Precision Medicine for Aggressive Breast Cancer (PMABC) program and supported by Pfizer.

Our focus: Early career researchers – the next generation of African scientists driving innovation from bench to bedside.

But we didn’t just talk about science.

We explored what it truly takes to build a meaningful research career:

1/ That career development isn’t just about titles or publications – It’s about personal growth, social engagement, and developing both hard and soft skills that translate into real-world impact.

2/ That research must be contextual, collaborative, and deeply grounded in the communities we serve.

3/ That mentorship, access to funding, and spaces to publish African evidence for African realities are not luxuries – they’re essentials.

This is the kind of dialogue and capacity-building Africa’s research ecosystem needs more of. And this symposium is just the beginning.

Grateful to our partners at PMABC and all the facilitators and participants investing in the future of African cancer research.

→ Stay tuned as the symposium continues.”
