Miriam Mutebi: Why “African Research by Africans for Africans” Isn’t Just a Slogan

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Why “African Research by Africans for Africans” Isn’t Just a Slogan. When an African doctor finds a clever way to help patients finish treatment… who else should hear about it? When a local nurse tests an idea that cuts delays by half… where does that story go?

Too often, it stays buried. Our Journal changes that. The new AORTIC- Africa Journal will publish African evidence, for Africa first, and provide opportunities for the world to learn from us, too.

Why is it so important?

If reputable journals globally can help shape policy and practice worldwide, then Africa must have its own trusted, visible home for our own evidence, shaped by us, for us.

The AORTIC Journal will therefore:

  • Publish African evidence first, so our realities and innovations are seen, cited, and acted on, not lost.
  • Connect researchers across the continent, so no one feels alone trying to solve the same challenge others have tackled.
  • Give local solutions global credibility, showing the world that Africa is not just a data source; we are knowledge producers and thought leaders.
  • Enhance impactful collaboration, providing a platform for transformative exchanges among local researchers, the diaspora, and the broader global community to facilitate bidirectional learning

This is more than pages in a journal; it is how we document our progress and tell our stories. It is how we ensure our populations are seen, heard, and represented. It is how we rewrite the narrative.

Africa, setting the agenda, driving the solutions, and inspiring better care everywhere.”
