Miriam Mutebi: I Had the privilege of attending the Common Sense Oncology (CSO) meeting
Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Common Sense Oncology (CSO) meeting in Montreal.
This gathering brought together global leaders in cancer care, including a panel I shared with American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) CMO Dr. Julie Gralow, Dr. Pramesh from India’s National Cancer Grid India, Carolyn Taylor from Global Focus on Cancer, among others.
The core message of CSO is straightforward: prioritize treatments that genuinely improve patients’ lives.
In an era where cancer treatments can be prohibitively expensive, CSO advocates for care that is both effective and affordable. This means focusing on therapies that offer real benefits, avoiding unnecessary treatments, and ensuring that patients are not burdened by financial toxicity.
CSO also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and innovation in healthcare. By working together and sharing knowledge, we can develop strategies that keep patients at the center of care. It’s about making informed decisions that reflect the values and needs of those we serve.
As a surgical oncologist, these principles resonate deeply with me. It’s a call to action to ensure that every patient receives care that is not only scientifically sound but also compassionate and equitable.

PS: At the CSO meeting, Carolyn gave one of the most important sets of remarks, asking tough questions like: ‘What does co-creation really mean?’ and encouraging use of people-centered language, thinking, and action.
Way to go, Carolyn!!”
