Michael Sapienza: June is National Cancer Survivors Month – A Call to Action for Colorectal Cancer Survivors
Michael Sapienza, Chief Executive Officer of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“June is National Cancer Survivors Month. It’s a powerful moment to recognize the more than 1.5 million colorectal cancer survivors across the country and to reflect on how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go.
Thanks to the lowered screening age, improved screening options and earlier detection, more older patients are living longer, fuller lives after a colorectal cancer diagnosis. But cases continue to rise among people under 50, and there have been little advances in late stage treatment options.
At the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, we’re committed to advancing the full spectrum of survivorship through initiatives like lead from behind to encourage prevention screening/early detection and Project Cure CRC to accelerate research, patient navigation/support, real-world data collection and life-saving clinical trials.
We must continue to shift the paradigm and make progress toward a cure, improving outcomes, and redefining what survivorship means.
