Melinda French Gates: No matter who you are transitions are inevitable
Melinda French Gates, Founder at Pivotal Ventures, shared on LinkedIn:
“Last year, I had the honor of speaking at Stanford University’s commencement ceremony. As I was working on my speech, I met with the Stanford class presidents to ask about what was on their minds and what they were hoping to hear from their commencement speaker. One of them told me he worried that a lot of his classmates already felt locked into a specific career and life path and suggested that I encourage the graduates to leave room for their plans to change.
Well, that, I thought, is important advice for everyone! You don’t get to be my age without navigating all kinds of transitions – some you hoped for and some you never expected. In the past few years alone, I turned sixty, became a grandparent, ended my marriage, and started a new chapter in my philanthropy. I have a lot of recent experience with how overwhelming change can feel.
Working on that speech led to the idea for my new book, The Next Day. Because no matter who you are or what stage of life you’re in, transitions are inevitable. I wrote The Next Day to share what I’ve learned about moving forward when the ground beneath you is shifting.
I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I hope readers will take comfort, as I do, in the idea that on the other side of change and uncertainty, there can be extraordinary possibilities awaiting us – including ones we haven’t even imagined yet.”
