Daniel Flora: Medicaid Is a Lifeline for Rural Cancer Care in Appalachia

Daniel Flora, Medical Director of Oncology Research at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Medicaid Is a Lifeline for Rural Cancer Care in Appalachia
I care for cancer patients in Northern Kentucky. Many come from small towns and rural counties. Some drive more than an hour to get to my clinic. They show up because they want to get through their diagnosis and back to their lives. For many of them, Medicaid is what makes that possible.
There’s a federal proposal to cut Medicaid funding over the next decade. The effects will not be immediate, but they will be far-reaching. In rural communities, they will be felt first and felt hardest.
Small hospitals rely on Medicaid to keep their clinics, imaging services, and oncology programs running. If that funding disappears, those programs will shrink or close. Patients who already face long drives and limited access will be left with even fewer options. And when services disappear from rural areas, they almost never return.
Since Kentucky expanded Medicaid, we’ve seen real progress. More patients are getting screened. More are being diagnosed earlier. I see it every week in my own clinic. People are starting treatment on time and getting better outcomes. That kind of access changes everything.”
