Mark Oppenheimer: The recent cuts by CDMRP has eliminated 100% of all funding for NF research

“The recent cuts by Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) has eliminated 100% of all funding for neurofibromatosis (NF) research. This is a devastating blow to the entire rare disease community and a glaring misstep in public health policy.
NF research has been a cornerstone in the fight against ALL rare diseases, driving innovations that ripple across multiple medical fields. This research has already saved millions of lives and billions of government dollars in expenditure.
Slashing all this funding will reverse this momentum, leaving countless children without hope for effective treatments who will now die, for no reason.
As a Board Member of the Children’s Tumor Foundation and, more importantly, as a father to a child battling NF, I am profoundly affected by this decision. Let it be known: it will take an insurmountable force to deter me from advocating fiercely for the restoration of this critical funding. I stand ready to mobilize every resource, connect with every ally, and challenge every obstacle to ensure that our children receive the support and hope they deserve.
I call upon policymakers, influencers, and the broader community to recognize the urgency of this issue. We must reinstate research funding, for those currently affected but for the future advancements in rare disease treatments that hang in the balance.”
