Douglas Flora: We Need to Approach Lung Cancer Screening With More Urgency at The National Level

Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared Michael Gieske’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“We need to approach lung cancer screening with more urgency at the national level.

It CAN be done, and lives WILL be saved. We are more than happy to share tools/keys to success with anyone who wants to build or grow their own program. Finding a new cancer every 25 unique patients scanned–this is high-yield cancer interception at its finest. Keep pushing, team. Relentless progress, RIGHT HERE.

‘Through low-dose CT lung cancer screening for lung cancer we’re changing the narrative around one of the deadliest cancers, the N1 cancer killer. Since 2013, St. Elizabeth Healthcare has conducted over 50,000 lung cancer screenings, identifying more than 500 stage I lung cancers. Early detection at this stage can offer a greater than 90% chance of cure.'”

Quoting Michael Gieske’s post:

“Grateful to Liz Bonis and the LOCAL 12, WKRC-TV for spotlighting St. Elizabeth Healthcare’s lung cancer screening efforts in her segment, ‘What’s Happening in Health.’

‘We’ve now found over 500 stage 1 lung cancers. These are individuals that are going to get to see their children get married, see their grandchildren born, see many more Thanksgivings and holiday celebrations…’

These phenomenal milestones are a testament to the power of proactive screening and the dedication of our passionate team of healthcare professionals and administrators.
