Leo Mascarenhas: We’ve raised survival from 65% to 85% in childhood cancer

Leo Mascarenhas, Director of the Sarcoma Program and Division Chief and Director at Cedars-Sinai, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I have been a member of COG since 1995 and have participated in and led clinical trials through this organization. When I started with COG, about 65% of children with cancer were expected to live 5 years or be cured. Today that number has increased to 85%. There are some cancers where 99% of children can be cured. I am fortunate to be a part of this research group which has been so impactful in the lives of so many children, adolescents and young adults and their families! I am proud to Chair the Voting Body of COG which is a group of over 220 Principal Investigators who are responsible for the conduct of childhood cancer clinical trials through COg at their institutions all over the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

We still have plenty of work to do especially for children and youth with brain tumors, sarcomas and other hard to treat cancers. By saving one child’s life, we gain 70 person years based on US life expectancy and these individuals contribute and give back to society. The NIH and funding from the federal government is critical for our work to continue and be impactful. It is one of the most meaningful ways of putting our tax dollars to work.
