Leigh Leibel: Emphasizing Global Investment in Cancer Research at ASCO25
Leigh Leibel, Clinical Director at Columbia University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It was an honor to co-present our research at ASCO25 alongside my colleague Runcie C.W. Chidebe, Executive Director of Project PINKBLUE and a true global health changemaker.
Our year-long, multi-site study (n=1,457) underscored how community outreach can significantly improve cancer education, early detection, and patient outcomes in Nigeria, where late-stage diagnoses remain far too common. While our field teams have made meaningful strides in advancing health literacy and expanding access to care, systemic barriers persist. That’s why continued global investment in cancer research—across prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship—is not optional, but essential.
Bringing clinical trials to sub-Saharan Africa is a pressing global imperative. At present, just 109 clinical trials are active across the entire continent, which is home to 1.5 billion people, or 18.8% of the world’s population. Science matters. And the 53.5 million cancer survivors worldwide are living proof of what sustained research makes possible. Let’s ensure we keep moving forward, supporting the critical research that helps people with cancer everywhere live longer and live better.”
Runcie C.W. Chidebe, Executive Director of Project PINK BLUE, shared a post by Leigh Leibel, adding:
“Since we met at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) fellowship, you have been a great collaborator. Thank you so much Leigh Leibel. Let’s do more to ChokeCancer.”
