Investigating the experience of families of children with cancer with SACT and pharmacy support – Larsen’s Pride
Larsen’s Pride, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This week, we were very proud to be able to present our poster CCLG: The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association annual conference.
Congratulations and thanks to Helin Polat for her work conducting the research and analysing the results with the support of Professor Shereen Nabhani-Gebara at Kingston University.
The project focused on: Investigating the experience of families of children with cancer with systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT) and pharmacy support: How can we do better?
Interestingly, whilst most pharmacists who completed the survey agreed that families knew how to contact a member of the pharmacy team when they had to and that they are easily identifiable as a member of the pharmacy team, the parents did not share the same beliefs.
Larsen’s Pride are proudly working in partnership with BOPA (The British Oncology Pharmacy Association) to implement the research recommendations:
Pharmacy interventions and meetings should commence where parents are less busy (3]
- Standard inductions within hospital to familiarise families with roles of the OPT.
- Miscellaneous activities carried out by pharmacists may be reduced – dispensing roles can be delegated to pharmacy technicians to improve pharmacist visibility (3,4).
- Further larger scale research is essential in answering the question of : How can we do better?
Ultimately, our aim, as always, is to improve the lived experience of children undergoing treatment for a brain tumour and with this project, we hope to improve the lives of the wider paediatric oncology community.
Please feel free to reach out to us and get in touch as parents and families, or oncology pharmacy professionals for more information and ways to get involved as the project develops.”
