Juan Gómez Rivas: Reporting of Unconventional Histologies in Prostate Cancer Remains Inconsistent
Juan Gómez Rivas, Associate Professor at Complutense University of Madrid, shared on X:
“The incidence of unconventional histologies (UHs) in prostate cancer is increasing significantly, rising from 0.7% in 2010 to 19% in 2023 in radical prostatectomy specimens. However, reporting remains inconsistent, even in leading tertiary centers.
Why does it matter? UHs like cribriform, ductal, and intraductal patterns are linked to more aggressive disease and may require different management strategies.
Key Takeaways:
- Biopsies may severely underestimate the true prevalence of UHs.
- There’s a pressing need for standardized reporting.
- Awareness is growing but remains suboptimal across institutions.
This study emphasizes the need to enhance diagnostic accuracy and align pathology practices worldwide.”
