Jihan Azar: Childhood Cancer Inequalities in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region
Jihan Azar, Consultant at World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Two weeks ago, my colleague Giuseppe Troisi and I were invited to the ‘Inaugural International Convention of Experts on Childhood and Adolescent Cancer’ in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Our contribution was about ‘Childhood Cancer Inequalities in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region’. As WHO EMRO, we have highlighted that, in addition to health system shortcomings similar to those occurring in other LMICs, conflicts and political instability in this Region halt and reverse progress in childhood cancer care provision.
Half of the countries in our region are either facing acute or protracted emergencies. Unfortunately, funds are usually diverted to trauma and infectious disease response in these settings. Cancer, and in specific childhood cancer are therefore underprioritized.
Cyprus is uniquely positioned between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The country has a long history of diplomatic interaction with these different regions and has recently been involved in the attempt of establishing a humanitarian corridor for victims of the war in Gaza.
With this spirit, ELPIDA Foundation invited experts from countries and institutions involved in strengthening childhood cancer care across three continents to build and solidify partnerships.
Thank you Dr. Professor Loizos G. Loizou and ELPIDA Foundation for having us, and for a promising collaborative effort to reduce global inequalities in childhood cancer care, so that no child is left behind.”
