Jennifer Bires: Reflecting on AOSW 2025 and the Impact of Oncology Social Workers
Jennifer Bires, Executive Director of Life with Cancer and Patient Experience for the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“AOSW 2025 is getting ready to wrap up, and my heart and mind are so full! This community never fails to inspire me—deeply rooted in compassion, driven by evidence, and always evolving to meet the needs of those impacted by cancer. I got to present with Krista Nelson and Wendy Whitekettle on Patient Naviagtion and PIN codes and Lindsey Lerner on Psychedelic Assisted Therapy for existential distress.
I heard so many incredible presentations on how oncology social workers are impacting the lives of patients, families and the health care system. Inova Health Peterson Life with Cancer therapists presented on important topics including our Mind Over Matter intervention that we have trained people on all across the country, HIV and cancer, and medical directives.
Throughout the conference, oncology social workers gave powerful presentations on critical topics shaping care for patients, families, and health systems. Allison J. Applebaum delivered a moving keynote on caregiving that left us all thinking deeply.
A huge thank you to Kelly Hendershot and Teresa van Oort MHA, LCSW-S, and the planning committee for an incredible gathering. It was such a joy to spend time with these brilliant advocates, thoughtful clinicians, and dear friends.”
