“Can generative AI support whole person care in cancer?
In our latest narrative review, Elizabeth F. Franklin, Krista Nelson, Douglas Flora, Kyle Bonesteel, and I explore how AI can transform psychosocial oncology—the part of cancer care that addresses emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual needs.
From automated distress screening to chatbot-delivered support and hybrid AI-human models, the potential to expand access, improve personalization, and relieve system strain is enormous. But tech alone isn’t the answer.
We emphasize that human interaction remains irreplaceable—especially when navigating complex emotions, delivering empathy, or responding to deeply personal concerns.
This paper dives into:
- Opportunities to use AI to improve outcomes and efficiency
- The ethical guardrails needed to protect trust and privacy
- The importance of co-designing tools with clinicians, ethicists, and—critically—patients
Because being alive isn’t enough. Patients deserve to live fully.
