Isabel Mestres: Inside vs. Outside of the 78th World Health Assembly – Two Different Worlds
Isabel Mestres, CEO of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Inside WHA78 vs. outside… two different worlds.
WHA78 has been called a “turning point” for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), though the real impact remains to be seen. Still, long-overdue resolutions on lung health, kidney disease, mental health, rare diseases, and more finally gave NCDs some much-needed visibility.
But while diplomacy filled the plenary, outside we were asking the tougher questions:
– How do we move from consultation to co-creation with local communities?
– How do we implement bold commitments in low-resource settings, where health systems are fragile and data is limited?
– How do we make cancer and NCDs central, in political and funding priorities? These are the conversations I had everyday from 7am to 7pm, with collegues, partners and ministries like the Ministry of Health of Ghana, where we committed to aligning national and local action, from practice to policy.
And from discussion to action, I flew with the “C/Can Global Gender Group” to Erlangen, home of Siemens Healthineers, to explore how innovation can truly serve local system needs. Because if it’s not reaching people with the greatest need, it’s not working.”
