Houssein Safa: Launching a New Series for Interns, Residents, and Hospitalists

Houssein Safa, Heme/Onc fellow at BCM Houston, shared a post on X:

Launching a new series for interns, residents, and hospitalists:

  • Oncology for The Non-Oncologist Tuesdays
  • Hematology for The Non-Hematologist Thursdays

My previous PD used to say “Heme/Onc is like practicing medicine on Mars.”

My goal? Take you to Mars, and make it less intimidating. Not to make you a heme/onc specialist, but to give you a practical approach to the heme/onc topics you actually see in internal medicine.”

Interns: I know heme/onc consults can feel like a black box and trigger instant anxiety.

I’m hoping this series will remove some of that anxiety and help you feel more confident when you’re on the wards.

First 5 Topics:

Onc Tuesdays

1. Oncology emergencies you can’t miss
2. Approach to an incidental mass
3. Hypercalcemia of malignancy
4. Managing chemo in admitted patients
5. When to call oncology

Heme Thursdays

1. Thrombocytopenia: What do you do now?
2. Pancytopenia: A practical approach
3. Leukopenia: Should you be worried?
4. Neutropenic fever simplified
5. Hemolysis workup without tears

Bonus topic: When to consider a bone marrow biopsy

What other topics would you like to see? Drop your requests below so we can make Mars a little more familiar.

If you think this will be helpful, like and repost so it reaches others who might need it. It might just save someone from a 2 AM “what do I do now” moment …. and help a hematologist/oncologist get a little more uninterrupted sleep. See you tomorrow!!
