Dr. Hongbo Chi Appointed Chair of Immunology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Science often advances through steady perseverance, bold ideas, and visionary leadership. For Dr. Hongbo Chi, those qualities have defined a career that now enters a new and exciting chapter: being named Chair of the Department of Immunology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A scientist, mentor, and innovator, Dr. Chi’s appointment marks not just a professional milestone—but a defining moment for a department poised to shape the future of immunology.
A Journey Fueled by Curiosity and Purpose: Hongbo Chi’s Vision for Immunology
Originally from China, Dr. Chi began his academic journey in pathology, earning a PhD from the University of Rochester before pursuing postdoctoral training in immunobiology at Yale University. His passion for understanding the immune system brought him to St. Jude in 2007—where over the years, he grew from a promising investigator into one of the world’s most cited immunologists.
His work has helped rewrite what we know about T cells and dendritic cells, which are essential in our body’s fight against cancer and infections. But more than discoveries, Dr. Chi has built something even more enduring: a research program that integrates cell metabolism, nutrient signaling, and immunogenomics to find real answers for children facing life-threatening illnesses.
A Vision to Expand What’s Possible
Now, as Chair of Immunology, Dr. Chi is setting his sights even higher. His vision includes recruiting world-class scientists, expanding the department’s research into cell–cell interaction networks, and exploring how the immune system communicates with other organ systems in the body.
“The Department of Immunology has fantastic expertise in understanding the fundamental cell biology of the immune system,” Dr. Chi said. “We’re aiming to fill the knowledge gap between cell biology and disease by advancing tissue and organismal immunity.”
That means embracing technologies like systems biology and immuno-engineering to spark new breakthroughs and build an environment where discovery is both innovative and collaborative.
Recognized Leadership, Global Impact
Dr. Chi’s contributions have earned him widespread recognition. He has been named to Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list in immunology for five consecutive years and was selected as a 2023 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)—an honor reserved for the world’s most influential scientists.
“A true innovator in immunology and immunometabolism, Hongbo’s work is already helping us find cures and save children with catastrophic diseases around the world,” said Dr. James R. Downing, President and CEO of St. Jude.
Succeeding a Trusted Leader, Shaping a New Era
Dr. Chi succeeds Dr. Terrence Geiger, who held the role in an interim capacity while also serving as Senior Vice President and Deputy Director for Academic and Biomedical Operations. Under Chi’s leadership, the department is poised not just to grow—but to lead.
“Dr. Chi and the Department of Immunology will continue to expand what we know is possible with the immune system,” said Dr. J. Paul Taylor, Executive Vice President and Scientific Director at St. Jude.
A Legacy That Begins with Children
For Dr. Chi, the mission is always clear: improving the lives of children with catastrophic diseases. Every cell studied, every network mapped, and every new discovery brings us one step closer to that goal.
His journey is a powerful reminder that science is not just a pursuit of knowledge—it is an act of hope. As Dr. Chi takes on this new role, he carries with him not only a legacy of discovery, but a commitment to building a brighter future for patients, families, and the global research community.
