Georgia House Committee is Digging Deeper Into the Threat of Cancer to Georgians and How to Address It
Georgia Research Alliance shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A Georgia House committee is digging deeper into the threat of cancer to Georgians and how to address it.
Led by Rep. Lee Hawkins of Gainesville, the House Study Committee on Cancer Care Access is conducting a listening tour around the state, meeting with healthcare providers and constituents.
That tour took the committee to Augusta University yesterday, including the Georgia Cancer Center, headed by GRA Eminent Scholar Jorge Eduardo Cortes, MD. The pricing of cancer-fighting drugs was a key part of the conversation, as Ty Tygami reports.
The Georgia Cancer Center is noted for its comprehensive care, particularly for underserved patient populations in Georgia.
And Dr. Cortes himself has led the development of drugs that are now key treatments for chronic myeloid leukemia.”
Amy C. Moore, Director of Patient Engagement and Advocacy at Summit Therapeutics, shared this post, adding:
“I am glad to see this effort. I spent a decade in Georgia helping to lead a statewide cancer initiative with a focus on improving outcomes by bringing top cancer researchers to the state’s academic institutions and community cancer centers, outfitting laboratories and supporting infrastructure needs including a centralized biorepository and more.
Yet, many challenges remain – disparities still exist and current funding reductions threaten the foundation that has been created.”
