Monica Bertagnolli: NIH funding yields so much more than individual research results
Monica Bertagnolli, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“NIH funding not only directly supports research projects, its associated indirect cost payments support our nation’s biomedical research infrastructure.
As a result, NIH funding yields so much more than individual research results. It drives our nation’s economic productivity and provides the foundation for training the next generation of scientists and clinical researchers who contribute their intellectual property to all areas of innovation in health.
Damaging the robustness of medical research in the US by forcing universities to curtail research projects that will now run in the red in order to save $4b at NIH is a terrible idea. This will result in nationwide losses in present value of many-fold more billions in order to save four.
And that, of course, assigns zero dollar value to the loss of societal benefits, including the lives that will be lost as a consequence.”
