Francisco J. Esteva: Addressing gaps in real-world oncology care through data studies
Francisco J. Esteva, Professor of Medicine at Zucker School of Medicine and Chief of Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“Why do groundbreaking clinical trial results often fail to translate into real-world oncology care? Addressing this challenge is key to better patient outcomes globally.
At the 2024 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, Dr. Carlos H. Barrios, Director at the Oncology Research Center at Hospital São Lucas-PUCRS (Brazil), shared real-world evidence on metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer treatment patterns in Brazil and Asia, highlighting significant disparities in care.
While the combination of a taxane with trastuzumab and pertuzumab (THP) is the standard of care in the first-line setting, this regimen is not consistently applied in many countries, revealing barriers to equitable cancer care.
These findings underscore the importance of real-world data studies presented this year at the symposium to bridge these gaps.
